Less than 800 miles from completing the Continental Divide Trail, Dane and some fellow hikers are forced into hiding in southwestern Montana. Deadly beasts with unnatural features are terrorizing the Old West and the Great Plains, forcing the military to barricade six states to prevent nationwide bloodshed. As hope and numbers both dwindle among Dane's group, they encounter an unassuming hiker who possesses a potent command of elemental forces—and Dane is open to learning anything from her that may keep them alive.
Their use of this empowerment to preemptively hunt the monsters does not go unnoticed by other survivors. A desperate group of people taking shelter in a ski lodge send a plea for protection—but Dane will learn that monstrous creatures are not the only threat there, and not everything is as it seems.
When darkness truly falls, can he trust this force of nature to help him rise?
